What We Put In

This verse keeps coming to my mind lately:

Philippians 4:8 - "...whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." [ESV] (emphasis mine)

Other translations use the phrase "dwell on these things," "fix your thoughts," and even "meditate on these things."

Paul just got finished telling us to rejoice always, to not be anxious but pray to God, and that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds. We have to do our part however, and that is what Paul tells us next. He says, "Finally, brothers..." As if it's the 'how-to' part that sums it all up. I love that about Paul.

I'm just so guilty of not thinking about such things. I'm plagued with this world. I shared the song lyrics of a Delirious song Kingdom of Comfort last time. It's true, I need saving from this kingdom of comfort where I am king. I think about myself so much, not enough about things that are honorable or praiseworthy. And why? Why do most of us think it's so tough? I have a conclusion...

We live in a Kingdom of DISTRACTION. American Christianity is so difficult because we don't teach to be UNdistracted. We don't preach enough of Philippians 4:8. We preach about making the gospel nice for those who don't have ears to hear. For the lost. But don't you remember Jesus saying "For those who have ears to hear...." Jesus was tough. "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword... Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." (Matthew 10:34, 39).

My point is that we have to get back to the BIBLE, and DO what it instructs. If you've ever traveled to a third-world country and you meet heart-felt, bible-doing Believers, you'll be inspired. You'll see a faith so strong. I'm sure you'll be almost jealous. When I've traveled to Benin and Liberia in West Africa I saw faith there that I will never see here in America. Despite their hardships, their faith was so strong and solid. But our western culture influences our faith. But why not their faith? One word: Distraction. We are distracted. Come on, America has everything the flesh could want. It's at our disposal. We are susceptible to everything Satan could have ever dreamed of to distract us from Jesus and His Truth. This means we have to be even more aware of what we're putting into our minds. It's our minds that control our actions. And the Spirit helps us control our minds. And thus the Spirit will help our actions when we... "think about these things..."

Our money, our jobs, our tv's, our iPod's and computers, our movies, they all distract us. (I am super guilty of this). But I have to come back to Philippians 4:8 in order to get a grip on what I'm putting in my mind. The more I think about purity, excellence and truth, the more my faith will grow and my love for Jesus will blossom and I will be "walking" with my Lord. And that's the goal isn't it? To walk with Jesus moment by moment...breath by breath...

Think about such things...it's the place to start.

My Urban Dictionary word of the day was "consumerican". They defined it as "an individual suffering from the particularly American brand of consumerism."

They also used it in a form of a sentence. The sentence read like this, "you'd have to be a real consumerican to always think you need the newest, most expensive computer every two years."

It is cute. It is clever. And sadly it is sooo true.

We are so distracted these days. Garbage in...and well, garbage out. If a social anthropologist studied our American culture long after we were dead, they would define us by the stuff we had and not the stuff we were made out of.

Thanks Jeff! Your posts make me think on THOSE things...

So I wanted to comment on it bro, for sure. Thanks for writing it, it was well thought out and dripping with grace.

As I interact with different cultures here in America (within the ministry I am a part of) I find that no matter what culture we are a part of, we in our inherit nature are consumers. Be it the rings we put around our necks (small tribes in Africa), technology in Japan, or beers in England (that was a joke), we all have an insatiable desire for more.

I think it is something that the human spirit conflicts with because of the insecurity found in ourselves without Christ. We are empty or there's something amiss, and we seek any and all things to fill it. Does that make sense.

Do we have more? I think so, but so did Amos' hearers who were arguably more affluent then us. I am distracted by these things, but I can also use them for the glory of God. Connecting with my students in Japan is one way to encourage them, or talking with one student in Korean over skype (or my best friend about nothing sometimes).

I think when you went to those countries you saw the Holy Spirit. It wasn't the people because what was attractive to you about the people was their simplicity and love. In your mind, that's the ideal at times. But if they come over here and see your relationship with Christ, I thin they too will see the Holy Spirit in your brother. I don't know, I guess I want to encourage you, that's all.

I know we get distracted. I hate it too. I too want to think on these things, and sometimes these technologies and others get my focus off. But what if you used those things that once distracted you for His glory?

Jeffrey Jeffrey Jeffrey!! My main passion is to get Christians away from the "American Dream." You hit the nail on the head bro. As much as I want to preach it, I am enslaved into Roberto's consemerican state of mind.

Great words and great verse, Phil. 4:8. I often wonder how much longer God will put up with our idolatry. As much as I would like to say we can change right now, I would feel I would have to be a good steward of my junk i.e. car, cell, xbox 360, macbook....wait, more idolatry!! I'll stop writing and repent. Let's change the world bro!!!!!!!

thanks bruthas!

Dan - I love your thinking. We could do one of two things: sell what stuff we have or, use what we have to glorify Him. Of course the second one is not that easy. But its the changing our minds; renewing it daily that will make it work.

Hey Jeff,
This morning on my drive to Pastoral Theology, I listened to a talk on marriage, and the pastor was using that verse (well, 4-8). It was really powerful.

My fave pastor, Rob Bell said, "if you were to move tomorrow, what would you: keep, sell, donate, give away, recycle and throw away." Carlos and I try to always go back to that refrain and it helps us keep life (and our house) simple and uncluttered.

I wrote a blog about this, you could read it if you want:)
Blessings bro,
Casey
